چکیده

This report describes an eye-tracking experiment which was conducted in the context of the student project Analyse und Modellierung von Blickbewegungen (Analysis and Modeling of Eye Movements) in summer term 2009 at Bielefeld University. The goal was to determine the influence of headmounted displays (HMDs) on natural visual search behavior. Subjects were instructed to find a previously specified number in a regular grid of numbers while their eye and head movements were tracked with an Eyelink II system. The task had to be accomplished under three different viewing conditions: full width of field of view, restriction of field of view via blinkers, and viewing through a Trivisio HMD. The recorded head and eye movements were used to calculate the eye-to-head movement coefficient for lateral fixations. Results show that wearing an HMD leads to less eye rotation and more head movement than under normal viewing conditions. Low resolution and a limited field of view seem to cause wearers of HMDs to adapt their natural lateral fixation behaviour. Those assumptions about eye rotation could be useful in future research projects focused on HMDs where direct access to actual eye data is not possible.

Vogbox – Video Oculography

Eye tracking and measurement of eye movement’s parameters is for the research and diagnosis of affection eye muscle, mental defect and neural illnesses very important. Nowadays there are many ways of assessing eye movements [1]. There are sclera search coils measurements, electrooculography, infra-red oculography, and the most modern videooculography. Videooculography (VOG) uses a camera to tra...

Eye-Head Coordination for Visual Cognitive Processing

We investigated coordinated movements between the eyes and head ("eye-head coordination") in relation to vision for action. Several studies have measured eye and head movements during a single gaze shift, focusing on the mechanisms of motor control during eye-head coordination. However, in everyday life, gaze shifts occur sequentially and are accompanied by movements of the head and body. Under...

Implementation of EOG-based Gaze Estimation in HMD with Head-tracker

Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are effective devices for creating immersive virtual environments. Intuitive movement field-of view (FOV) is possible in virtual reality (VR) space with a HMD equipped with a head-tracker. However, gaze targets are not accurately detectable by the measurement of head movements alone. An eye-tracker is needed to determine gaze positions; however, such trackers curren...

Perceptual Issues in the Use of Head-Mounted Visual Displays

OBJECTIVE We provide a review and analysis of much of the published literature on visual perception issues that impact the design and use of head-mounted displays (HMDs). BACKGROUND Unlike the previous literature on HMDs, this review draws heavily from the basic vision literature in order to help provide insight for future design solutions for HMDs. METHOD Included in this review are articl...

Performance and comfort on near-eye computer displays.

BACKGROUND Very small high-resolution displays (SVGA, 800 x 600 pixels) worn near the eye and imaged to create a virtual image have potential as alternatives to traditional computer displays. METHODS Twenty-two subjects performed text-based tasks on five displays: monocular virtual, binocular head-mounted virtual, hard copy, flat panel, and a small format portable display. Outcome measures in...
